Preventing Image Copying in Wix: Methods and Limits

Removing “Save image” from a menu does not make a web file inaccessible. Choose copying deterrents according to the route each one actually affects.

Quick answer and first checks

No ordinary displayed web image can be promised protection from every copying method. Right-click and drag restrictions may discourage easy routes; a watermark supplies a visible ownership mark. Check the difference between file-embedded and page-only marks.

  • Identify the copying method being targeted
  • Assess watermarks separately from restrictions
  • Preserve navigation and keyboard usability

Quick answer

Restrict right-clicking and dragging, watermark valuable images and avoid serving the original high-resolution files. Do not promise complete protection against source-code access or screenshots.

1. Discourage saving through right-click

“Save image as” is one of the most common desktop actions. Right-click restrictions can reduce this quick copying route.

However, browser tools and different device behaviours mean it should not be treated as absolute protection.

2. Control image dragging

Some users try to save an image by dragging it to the desktop or another tab. Measures that restrict dragging can make casual copying harder.

Because mobile behaviour differs, test long-press actions and sharing menus separately.

3. Understand the limits of new-tab and direct-file access

How a browser serves an image file can vary with the theme and component structure. A restriction on the page does not always remove the file URL.

The most valuable layer is therefore an ownership mark on the image itself, combined with an appropriate resolution policy.

4. Combine watermarks with technical restrictions

Even when a technical restriction is bypassed, a watermark remains visible on the image. Watermarks and browser-level deterrence are therefore separate, complementary layers.

Adjust watermark density to the value of the image and its usage context.

5. Make sure accessibility is preserved

Code intended to discourage copying should not block unrelated interactions such as text selection or keyboard behaviour. Protection should focus only on the necessary elements.

After launch, check basic navigation with a keyboard, touch screen and different browsers.

6. Manage both layers with Filigrunner

Filigrunner lets you manage visible watermarks and right-click or image-copying deterrence in the same product.

First select the image coverage you want to protect, then apply restrictions at a level that preserves the user experience.

Frequently asked questions

Can I completely block image downloads on Wix?

No. Content displayed in a browser can be obtained through different technical routes. You can, however, reduce easy copying methods and preserve an ownership mark with watermarks.

Is right-click blocking enough on its own?

Usually not. It provides more meaningful deterrence alongside watermarks and an appropriate resolution policy.

Is image copying the same on mobile?

No. Mobile browsers offer different routes, including long-press actions, sharing and screenshots, which need separate testing.
